چکیده

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) was first observed over 100 years ago yet its association with clinical diseases was not fully understanding until 1982 when Marshall and Warren identified and subsequently cultured the gastric bacterium. At their first attempt to culture the bacteria was not successful. Colonies finally grew when they accidentally left some culture plates over the Easter holiday. Dr. Barry Marshall subsequently inoculated himself with culture broth containing more than 1 billion organism to prove that this bacterium would cause peptic ulcers supporting Koch’s postulate. He developed acute gastritis 1 week after the inoculation. H. pylori is a microaerophilic, spiral shaped, gram negative bacterium measuring about 3.5 microns in length and 0.5 microns in width. In vitro, this bacterium is a gradually growing organism that can be cultured on blood agar incubated at 37oC in a microaerophilic condition (5% oxygen) for 4-7 days. The colony of this bacteria is tiny, uniformly sized and translucence (fig 2A).

An Evidence-Based Approach to the Management of Functional Dyspepsia Associated With Helicobacter pylori Infection

BACKGROUND Functional dyspepsia is defined as at least a 3-month history of dyspepsia without structural explanation for the symptoms, and it accounts for most cases of dyspepsia. We designed this study to investigate functional dyspepsia among a Chinese population in Taiwan. METHODS Data from the medical records of 1,143 adult patients who underwent transoral upper endoscopy for symptoms of ...

Helicobacter pylori and functional dyspepsia: review of previous studies and commentary on new data.

Many studies have attempted to prove a link between Helicobacter pylori infection and functional dyspepsia but the results have been conflicting. Several mechanisms have been postulated for how H pylori associated inflammation disturbs antral and duodenal function but no pathophysiological explanation of how H pylori may cause dyspeptic symptoms is presently available.

Should We Still Subcategorize Helicobacter pylori-Associated Dyspepsia as Functional Disease?

Functional dyspepsia is a group of disorders featuring symptoms believed to be derived from the stomach and duodenum such as upper abdominal discomfort, pain, postprandial fullness and early satiety. A key diagnostic requisite is the absence of organic, metabolic, or systemic disorders to explain "dyspeptic symptoms." Therefore, when peptic ulcer diseases (including scars), erosive esophagitis ...

Relationship between alcohol consumption and active Helicobacter pylori infection.

BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a cause of chronic gastritis and maybe responsible for functional dyspepsia in a subset of patients. Many risk factors, such as alcohol consumption and smoking, may contribute to the colonization and infection of H. pylori in humans. However, studies on the relationship between H. pylori infection and drinking or smoking have produced conflicting re...

What Is the Difference Between Helicobacter pylori-Associated Dyspepsia and Functional Dyspepsia?

Advances in basic and clinical research have revealed that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection plays an important role in the development of gastroduodenal dysmotility and hypersensitivity, as also in dyspepsia symptoms. In addition, recent studies have proposed an inflammation-immunological model for the pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia. Since H. pylori is the major microbe that prov...

Treatment of Helicobacter pylori in functional dyspepsia resistant to conventional management: a double blind randomised trial with a six month follow up.

BACKGROUND Previous studies on the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in functional dyspepsia have shown little, if any, effect on dyspeptic symptoms. However, whether such treatment might be of benefit in patients resistant to acid inhibitors has not been formally tested. AIM The present study investigated the effect of H pylori treatment in patients with functional dyspepsia resista...
